How To Choose A Black Leather Bag You'll Still Be Carrying In Ten Years
Structure, hardware, strap drop. The four things that separate a bag that lasts from one you replace next year.
Every wardrobe eventually needs one bag that never has to be thought about. Not the interesting one. The one that goes with the work outfit, the wedding outfit and the airport outfit without being asked twice.
Look for structure that holds itself. A bag that keeps its shape when you set it down will still look intentional after two years of being stuffed into overhead bins. Soft, unlined leather sags. Boxy silhouettes with a defined base do not.
Hardware is the tell. Gold zips, a small padlock, a clasp with weight to it. Cheap hardware pits and flakes long before the leather gives out, so it is worth checking how the zip pulls feel in your hand before anything else.
Decide how you’ll actually carry it. Short top handles are for desks and dinners. If you commute, you want a detachable strap too. Most bags that get abandoned were bought for one carrying position and needed another.
Let it be boring. The bag that argues with nothing is the bag you reach for daily. Keep the leather quiet and let the fragrance, the nail colour or the coat carry the personality instead.
Buy once, take it to a cobbler when the corners wear, and it will outlast most of what surrounds it.
