Golden Hour Is Overrated — Shoot at Blue Hour Instead

Golden Hour Is Overrated — Shoot at Blue Hour Instead

Every photography guide tells you to shoot at golden hour. Fair enough — but the 20 minutes after sunset, the blue hour, is where the interesting light lives.

The sky turns into a giant softbox: deep blue tones, no harsh shadows, and city lights start balancing perfectly against the ambient light. It’s the only time of day you can expose for both a skyline and the sky behind it without bracketing.

The catch is that it’s short. Check your local sunset time, arrive ten minutes early, and expect the whole window to be over in half an hour.
